What to Look For:

1. Early Signs

Initially, water is not visible and signs may be subtle. You may notice dampness or areas of discoloration. On closer inspection, you may find mildew, fungus, or rust at the base of metal appliances. You may notice odors and allergies may be triggered. If not detected and arrested, dampness will increase and become more obvious. Hairline cracks may become visible along with visible spots of peeling paint and what appears to be white powder on walls.

2. Advanced Signs

Water is visible as the problems worsen. You may find puddling on floors or actually see water seeping in on rainy days. Floor tiles may lift. Heavy prolonged rains can cause your basement to flood. Caution: if water has come in contact with electrical wiring it can carry a current that can shock or electrocute.

3. Structural Damage

Signs of an ongoing unchecked water are obvious. Compromised walls will visibly bow or buckle causing floors to shift and drop. Corners may shift and crack. Mud and clay silt will find its way inside. It’s possible to actually feel the house is shifting.
